Our entire HIOBS community is deeply saddened and disturbed by yesterday’s events in Uvalde, Texas, at Robb Elementary School. As an educational organization, we know we must do better in protecting our youth and our communities from the ravages of gun violence. We must also have the honesty to admit that in Congress and in state legislatures around the country, we are failing this test of leadership, consciousness, and compassion in enacting sensible gun control legislation.
Our hearts break for all the families and communities that suffer such incredible and unnecessary loss with events like this. May we find the strength and courage to have this be the last time we bear witness to such a tragedy.
For families, educators, and all those who work with our youth, please consider this helpful resource for discussing school shootings.
“How Do We Go On?”
by John Mark GreenHow do we go on, after the unthinkable happens? How can we carry the burden of knowing the world can be cruel and dangerous, the future so unpredictable? How do we grieve with empty arms and a head filled with echoing memories?
We are stronger than we know, and this is how we show it: holding each other, giving comfort in the midst of pain. Loving more fiercely, through our actions and the things we say. Making the world just a bit better, every single day. Never taking life for granted, knowing that it can be snatched away.
This world may bring deep darkness, but we are the bearers of light. We’ll join our flames together, and shine in the blackest of nights.
